Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy has addressed the recent controversy surrounding his remarks about his fans, revealing that he is dealing with private struggles.
The singer, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, sparked criticism after jokingly claiming he does not beg anyone to be his fan and stating that he prefers “rich fans.” The comment, shared on social media, was widely misinterpreted and led to a public backlash.
Responding on his Instagram story, Burna Boy clarified that his statement was meant in jest. He also emphasised that he is managing personal battles and does not seek public sympathy.
“I was joking around with my band about something else, not this situation, and y’all have spun it as usual saying ‘Burna Boy doesn’t love his fans,’” he wrote.
The singer further called for an end to insecurity and terrorism across Nigeria, Congo, and Sudan. “If you hate me so much either kill me or leave me alone. I’m fighting my own battles and I never come out here to look for pity or help. I love who loves me and respect who respects me. Free Sudan, free Congo, free Nigeria,” he added.
Burna Boy’s comments reflect a mix of humour, frustration, and concern over broader socio-political issues, highlighting his stance on personal resilience and regional peace.
