A two-storey building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State in the early hours of Monday, leaving several residents trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident occurred at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, around 12:20 a.m., according to a situation report from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS).
Confirming the development, the Director of the LSFRS, Margaret Adeseye, said the building had already been marked “distressed” before the collapse.
“It is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which had reportedly been marked in distress before collapsing on the occupants,” she stated.
Adeseye disclosed that 15 people including seven men, four women, and four children were rescued with varying degrees of injury.
The victims have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for treatment.
Rescue teams from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station and other emergency responders were still working at the scene as of the time of filing this report.
Recurring Building Collapses in Lagos
Incidents of building collapse remain a major safety concern in Lagos, particularly during the rainy season, when weakened structures are most vulnerable.
Just last month, six people were rescued after a two-storey building came down on Modupeola Street, Mangoro, Alimosho. Similarly, on September 13, one person was confirmed dead after a three-storey building collapsed in the Alagomeji area of Yaba.
Experts have repeatedly blamed the recurring incidents on poor construction practices, sub-standard materials, and weak enforcement of building regulations.
One of the most tragic cases in recent years was the Ikoyi high-rise collapse in November 2021, which claimed over 40 lives. More recently, in September 2025, a four-storey building under construction also caved in within the Yaba district, leaving multiple casualties.
Rescue operations at the Oyingbo collapse site are still ongoing, and authorities are yet to confirm if there are additional victims trapped under the debris.
