The supporters of the three top rugby clubs in the land: Pirates, Kobs and Heathens are quite extreme.
They would not wish anything good for each other. Yet, as the Uganda Rugby Cup enters the semi-finals this weekend, the three behemoths of Ugandan rugby would not mind Buffaloes winning it all.
That is the only thing the trio would have consensus on considering how much it would hurt any of the three if their main rival won it. Pirates face off with Kobs, while Heathens tackle Buffaloes at King’s Park arena, Bweyogerere and Kyadondo rugby grounds respectively.
In a way, Buffaloes are seen as the gatecrashers to this party, because they are the only team in the semis that has not won this cup before. They thus, have the sympathy of many. There would be less taunting, as is usually the case when Pirates, Kobs or Heathens win.
But seeing how that trio has been performing in the Uganda Cup, they badly want it. After winning the Premiership in May, Pirates had their focus on trying to complete the treble, as they had done in the 2017/18 season.
Yet, Walukuba Barbarians emerged from the blue to win the 7s. That brought Pirates’ lock, Frank Kidega, to say after match-day two on the Uganda Cup, that they were hungry for this one because it had been seven years without winning it.
