Billionaire industrialist and BUA Group Chairman, Abdulsamad Rabiu, announced on Thursday his decision to fulfill a $500,000 financial pledge to the Super Eagles, despite the team’s elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
In a statement shared via his official Instagram account, the business mogul celebrated the Nigerian squad for their unwavering resilience, bravery, and competitive drive throughout the tournament in Morocco. Rabiu lauded the players for their immense dedication on the pitch, asserting that while they did not secure the trophy, their performance brought immense pride to the nation.
“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch. Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud,” Rabiu wrote. The philanthropist further noted that final results do not always reflect the magnitude of effort invested, emphasizing that the passion and national unity inspired by the team remain their most significant achievements.
“Sometimes, even our best efforts don’t bring the outcome we hope for, but the spirit, passion and unity you displayed are what truly matter. You left everything on the field, and that is grocery of celebration,” he added. As a tangible gesture of appreciation, Rabiu confirmed the disbursement of the $500,000 reward he originally promised as a motivational incentive before the competition began. He described the funds as a tribute to the team’s hard work and the collective joy they provided to millions of Nigerians over the past several weeks.
The Super Eagles journeyed through a remarkable campaign that captured the imagination of the continent but faced a tactical stalemate in the final four. Nigeria lost 4–2 in a high-tension penalty shootout to host nation Morocco on Wednesday night, following a goalless draw after 120 minutes at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. While the defeat ended Nigeria’s quest for a fourth title, Rabiu encouraged the players to maintain their confidence, expressing certainty that the experience gained would serve as a catalyst for future international success.
