Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is set for a significant spell on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury during the Red Devils’ 2–1 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday. The 31-year-old playmaker pulled up sharply in the first half at Villa Park and, despite attempting to play through the discomfort, was replaced by Lisandro Martínez at the interval.
Manager Ruben Amorim confirmed after the match that the injury appears to be a “soft tissue” issue, which traditionally carries a recovery timeline of three to six weeks depending on the severity.
“I think it’s soft tissue, so it’s going to be a while. We’ll see,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “It is really strange. During this year, especially at this time, we have so many problems, but we have to cope with that.”
The loss of Fernandes is a devastating blow for Amorim, who is already grappling with a depleted squad during the congested festive period. United’s midfield options have been slashed due to a combination of injuries and international commitments:
Kobbie Mainoo: Ruled out for “a few weeks” after sustaining a calf injury during training on Saturday.
Casemiro: Missed the Villa game due to suspension but is expected to return for the Boxing Day clash.
AFCON Departures: Key attacking threats Bryan Mbeumo (Cameroon) and Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast) have already departed for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Defensive Woes: Harry Maguire remains out with a long-term hamstring problem, while Matthijs de Ligt (back) is a major doubt for the upcoming fixtures.
