South Africa head coach Hugo Broos says he is banking on divine intervention to help Bafana Bafana qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The South Africans face Rwanda in their final Group C qualifying match on Tuesday and must not only win but also hope Nigeria defeat Benin Republic in Uyo.
Broos’ men currently occupy second place with 15 points, two behind Benin Republic, who lead the group with 17 points going into the decisive fixtures.
Speaking during a press conference, Broos urged his players to remain focused on their task and play with belief.
“We have to focus only on ourselves. Like Ronwen Williams said, we can’t change or decide what happens in Nigeria,” Broos stated.
“If we win, we just have to wait and see. I think what we all want and dream of can happen tomorrow. We are ready for it and ready to play a good game.”
The Belgian tactician added that his team is prepared for any outcome but admitted that luck — and perhaps the gods — may have a role to play.
“We are ready to win the game, but we all know that might not be enough. So let’s hope on the other side that the gods are with us and that Benin lose,” he said.
A successful qualification would mark South Africa’s first World Cup appearance since 2010, when they hosted the global tournament.
