Former Barcelona striker Martin Braithwaite has reflected on Lionel Messi’s exit from the Catalan giants, insisting the Argentina captain did not deserve to leave in the manner he did.
Messi departed Barcelona in 2021 as a free agent after the club’s financial crisis prevented a contract renewal. The 38-year-old went on to join Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Inter Miami.
Speaking to GE, Braithwaite revealed the shock among the squad at the time and expressed hope that Messi will return to retire at the club.
“It was strange because it happened suddenly, we were all expecting him to renew, everything was ready for the contract renewal, and suddenly he left the club,” Braithwaite said.
“Leo is a very lovable person and helps us, and you feel comfortable with him. He was very calm. As for Leo as a player, I think I don’t need to say anything.
“He didn’t deserve that. I hope he can play his last match there because he truly deserves it.”
Messi remains Barcelona’s all-time top scorer and is widely regarded as the club’s greatest-ever player.
