Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has faulted the Super Eagles players for their performance in Nigeria’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semifinal defeat to Morocco on Wednesday.
The Super Eagles were eliminated after a 0-0 draw in regulation and extra time, losing 4-2 in the penalty shootout against the host nation in Rabat. The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of winning a fourth continental title.
In a video reaction, Bovi argued that distractions, including social media attention and fan praise, contributed to the team’s underwhelming performance. He also highlighted that delayed match bonuses may have affected the players’ motivation.
“Football is the only thing that unites Nigeria,” Bovi said. “So dear Super Eagles and aspiring Super Eagles, have it in mind that if you are playing for Nigeria, regardless of how the NFF treats you, understand that you have the potential to unite Nigerians.”
He addressed Samuel Chukwueze’s missed penalty directly, acknowledging the pressure but urging players to understand the weight of representing the nation.
“I forgive Samuel Chukwueze for missing a penalty. But you need to understand that the weight of a nation lies in your hands. Don’t come to the Super Eagles if you are not ready to give everything for the nation. If NFF delays your payment, let it go. Social media has distracted you all, and the praise got to your heads,” he added.
Bovi stressed that fans’ admiration is often for players’ performance, not their personalities, and called on players to remain focused and committed whenever they represent Nigeria.
The comments have reignited discussions about professionalism, discipline, and accountability within the national team as fans continue to dissect Nigeria’s AFCON campaign.
