The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, Borno State, was caused by a suicide bomber.
The incident occurred at about 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC). According to the Headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), preliminary investigations indicate that the attack was carried out by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Theatre Command, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Army said the attacker detonated an improvised explosive device (IED), killing himself and two civilians at the scene.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the incident was caused by a suspected Boko Haram Terrorist suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians on the spot,” the statement said.
Lt. Col. Uba explained that troops of Operation Hadin Kai, working in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, other security agencies, the Borno State Government, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), swiftly responded to the incident.
“The affected area was immediately secured and cordoned off to prevent further harm and ensure public safety,” he added.
He disclosed that victims of the blast were promptly evacuated to the General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.
According to the Army, a total of 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries in the attack. However, two of the injured later died while receiving treatment, bringing the total number of civilian fatalities to four. Two other victims remain in critical condition, while the remaining injured persons are reported to be stable and responding to treatment.
While reassuring residents of Maiduguri and surrounding communities of their safety, Lt. Col. Uba said security forces have intensified surveillance and security operations across the city, especially during the festive period.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to protecting lives and property and preventing further attacks within the North-East region.
