United States-based entertainment magazine Billboard is facing criticism on social media after describing Nigerian singer Rema as a “one-hit wonder.”
On February 16, 2026, the publication reshared a June 2025 chart feature in which it ranked Rema at number six on its list of the “25 Biggest One-Hit Wonders of the 21st Century.” The ranking was attributed to the global success of his single Calm Down, particularly the remix featuring American pop star Selena Gomez.
In its explanation, Billboard noted that Rema has not returned to the Hot 100 chart since the success of Calm Down. However, the outlet acknowledged that the singer recorded six top 10 entries on the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart through the June 7, 2025 tally.
The resurfaced post triggered swift reactions online, with many fans arguing that the label overlooks Rema’s broader commercial achievements and international influence.
One user, @MikeAgrow, wrote that Rema has consistently released hit songs, sold out arenas, and played a key role in expanding Afrobeats globally, insisting that performance on a single chart should not define his career.
Another commenter, @flourish_empire, questioned the classification, describing it as a downplay of the singer’s catalogue. A third user, @gtm_gtel, criticised the publication’s ranking, stating that it does not reflect African music realities.
The debate highlights ongoing conversations about how global chart systems measure success for Afrobeats artists, particularly those whose primary impact may extend beyond the U.S. mainstream charts.
As of press time, neither Rema nor his representatives had publicly responded to the ranking.
