The Benin Traditional Council has initiated disciplinary നടപടions following an unauthorised visit to the palace of the Oba of Benin by popular streamer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, widely known as Peller.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Secretary, Frank Irabor, the council described the incident as a serious violation of palace traditions and protocols, warning that those involved would face consequences.
Peller reportedly visited the palace on March 6 as part of his nationwide tour and was received by some palace figures. However, the council said the process through which he gained entry did not follow established procedures.
According to the council, the incident amounts to a desecration of the palace, which it emphasised is a sacred institution and not a venue for casual visits or content creation.
A palace queen allegedly linked to facilitating the visit is now under investigation and could be removed, depending on the outcome of internal proceedings.
The council also disclosed that it had taken immediate action against other individuals involved. A chief found culpable has been placed on indefinite suspension, while a staff member identified as Omuemu has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court for his role in the incident.
Irabor said a preliminary investigation revealed how the unauthorised access occurred, adding that the council acted swiftly to preserve the dignity of the palace.
The BTC further directed Peller to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain the circumstances surrounding his visit. The council noted that he has yet to honour the invitation.
It has now publicly demanded his immediate appearance and a written apology, warning that failure to comply could result in legal action.
“The palace is the spiritual and historical seat of the Oba of Benin, governed by long-standing customs,” the statement stressed, reiterating that breaches of such protocols would not be tolerated.
The council reaffirmed its role as custodian of Benin traditions and pledged to take necessary steps to prevent a recurrence, under the leadership of His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II.
