Benin’s government has successfully thwarted an attempted military coup that unfolded early Sunday, with security forces regaining control of key installations, including the National TV station.
Eight soldiers calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR) appeared on television, citing deteriorating northern security and alleged neglect of fallen soldiers. President Patrice Talon confirmed the situation is under control.
In response, ECOWAS announced the immediate deployment of its standby force, including troops from Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire, to support Benin’s government.
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu praised his country’s military for swift action, which included air strikes and ground support coordinated with Beninese authorities to secure national institutions and safeguard civilians.
Benin, which has a history of coups, is now stable as authorities reaffirm their commitment to protecting the nation’s constitutional order ahead of the 2026 elections.
