Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr will be without two of his key players when his side faces Nigeria in their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Uyo.
Midfielder Sessi d’Almeida and defender Yohan Roche will miss the encounter after both received their second yellow cards during Benin’s 1-0 win over Rwanda on Friday — a result that kept the Cheetahs firmly in contention for the group’s sole qualification ticket.
Speaking after the game, Rohr acknowledged the setback but remained upbeat about his team’s chances.
“We have lost two players (for the match against Nigeria) as a result of a second yellow card.
But all is possible for the three teams (South Africa, Benin and Nigeria).
We now have the decision (to win in Uyo) in our hands. This can be a little advantage. But we will see, we will see. Big suspense until the end [of the qualifying series],” Rohr told journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.
Benin currently sit joint-top of Group C alongside South Africa, while Nigeria remain three points behind in third. A win in Uyo would keep Rohr’s men on course for a historic first-ever World Cup qualification.
The Super Eagles, however, will also be missing a key player — Ademola Lookman, who is suspended after picking up a yellow card in their 2-1 victory over Lesotho.
Both teams will face off on Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, in what promises to be a thrilling and decisive encounter for Group C.
