The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially announced a scheduled power outage affecting the Benin–Ajaokuta 330kV Transmission Line to facilitate critical restringing works at the Ihovbor Power Plant Turn-In/Turn-Out Transmission Substation.
This project, which commenced on February 27, 2026, is set to continue until March 31, 2026, taking place daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The ongoing restringing project is essential for the maintenance and reliability of the transmission line connected to the Ihovbor Power Plant.
To ensure the safety of the construction process, temporary power interruptions will occur, particularly since the transmission line crosses major highways along the Benin–Ajaokuta route.
TCN has coordinated with road safety agencies, who will be on standby to monitor and enforce safety measures throughout the construction period.
As a result of the scheduled outage, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) will be unable to supply electricity to areas including the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Oluku, Egba, and the Ihovbor environs for up to 10 hours each day. However,
TCN has assured that power supply to these regions will be restored daily from 6:00 PM until 8:00 AM the following morning, when the restringing activities will resume.
In a statement issued by Ndidi Mbah, GM of Public Affairs at TCN, the company expressed its sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused by the scheduled works and assured all affected customers that full bulk power supply will be reinstated to the Distribution Company upon the project’s completion.
“The exercise is necessary to enable TCN’s contractor to continue the restringing works on the 330kV transmission line connected to the Ihovbor Power Plant.
“Additionally, the project requires temporary power interruptions because the transmission line crosses major highways along the Benin–Ajaokuta axis. Road safety agencies have been duly notified and will be on standby to ensure public safety throughout the construction period.
“Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) will be unable to supply electricity to its customers in UNIBEN, Oluku, Egba, and Ihovbor environs for up to 10 hours each day during the construction period.
“Please note that restringing activities will be suspended daily at 6:00pm, after which the affected feeders will be restored. This means that BEDC will be able to off-take electricity to the above-mentioned areas from 6:00pm until 8:00am the following day.
“TCN apologises for any inconvenience this may cause and assures all affected customers that full bulk power supply will be restored to the DisCo upon completion of the project,” Mbah stated.
As the work progresses, TCN remains committed to providing updates to the public to ensure transparency and mitigate disruption during the construction period.
Customers are encouraged to prepare for the temporary outage and to reach out to BEDC for further information regarding their specific supply situations.
