The management of Bayelsa United has issued a two-game ultimatum to the club’s players and technical crew following a string of disappointing results in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The decision was announced by the club’s chairman, Tarilaye Nwankwe, during an emergency meeting with players and coaches at the team’s camp in Yenagoa, according to a statement released by the club’s media officer on Wednesday.
Bayelsa United, nicknamed the Prosperity Boys, have won only one of their last seven league matches. The ultimatum will take effect from this weekend’s clash with Warri Wolves in Ozoro and continue through their home fixture against Plateau United on October 31, 2025.
Dr. Nwankwe said the decision was necessary in light of the team’s poor form, especially their lacklustre performance in last Sunday’s game against newly-promoted Kun Khalifat.
“The Bayelsa State Government has invested heavily in this club, and so far, the results have been far from impressive. We cannot continue with such performances. The investment must reflect on the pitch starting this weekend,”
he said.
He stressed that the move was not a witch-hunt but a decisive step to ensure everyone within the club aligns with its ambition of making Bayelsa United one of Nigeria’s leading football teams.
Head coach Meremu Okara and his team will now face intense pressure to deliver positive results in their next two fixtures to avoid possible sanctions from the club’s management.
