The Senator representing Bauchi North, Samaila Kaila, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal party crises and admiration for President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the defection during plenary on Tuesday, after reading a letter from the lawmaker detailing his reasons for leaving the PDP.
In his letter, Senator Kaila explained that deep-seated internal conflicts within the PDP had “gravely constrained” his ability to effectively represent his constituents and fulfill his constitutional duties.
“The Peoples Democratic Party has gravely constrained my ability to discharge my constitutional responsibilities effectively and in good conscience,” the letter read.
Kaila said his decision to join the APC was driven by a desire to align with a platform that, in his words, promotes “good governance, unity, progress, and discipline in leadership.”
“As one deeply committed to the service of our nation and the welfare of my people, I have found it necessary to realign my political engagements with a more progressive platform that embodies good governance, unity, and national growth,” he stated.
The Bauchi senator also praised President Tinubu’s leadership, describing his economic and governance reforms as “bold, transformative, and necessary for Nigeria’s future.”
“Consequently, I have chosen to join the All Progressives Congress and lend my full commitment to the reforms of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu,” Kaila declared.
“I hold in high regard the President’s courageous efforts to restore economic stability, strengthen governance, and reposition our nation for sustainable growth.”
He further described Tinubu’s administration as demonstrating the kind of decisive leadership Nigeria needs at this critical period.
“These efforts reflect the decisive leadership our country needs. I am confident that these reforms align with my ideals and enduring conviction to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development and democratic advancement,” he concluded.
Kaila’s defection adds to the growing list of PDP lawmakers crossing over to the APC in recent weeks, signaling shifting political alliances ahead of future elections.
