As part of efforts to curb recurring cholera outbreaks, the Bauchi State Government has inaugurated the State Cholera Steering and Technical Committees.
Speaking at the inauguration on Wednesday in Bauchi, Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau, who will chair the steering committee, urged members to discharge their duties with passion and professionalism.
He noted that cholera remains one of the state’s most pressing public health threats, claiming lives, disrupting livelihoods, and straining healthcare systems despite continuous interventions.
“These outbreaks are often preventable with timely interventions, coordinated responses, and sustained improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH),” Jatau said.
According to him, the committees will coordinate Bauchi’s multi-sectoral response to cholera, while also driving long-term prevention strategies in line with the National Cholera Control Plan and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
He added that members were chosen for their expertise and strategic importance, and urged them to prioritise effective surveillance, early detection, and rapid response to potential outbreaks.
Jatau also reassured health partners of Governor Bala Mohammed’s full support and commitment to creating an enabling environment for the committees to succeed.
In his remarks, Commissioner for Health and Chairman of the Technical Committee, Sani Dambam, pledged close collaboration with stakeholders to deliver on the state’s cholera control and prevention mandate.
