Spanish midfield great Sergio Busquets has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current MLS season in October.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano first revealed the news on Friday, confirming that the Inter Miami star has decided to hang up his boots after a glittering career. Busquets, 36, later confirmed the decision in an emotional Instagram post, sharing a tribute video with the caption:
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone, and to football, for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.”
Widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive midfielders of his generation, Busquets built his legacy on intelligence, composure, and unmatched game control.
During his illustrious career, he won multiple La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles with Barcelona, forming part of the legendary tiki-taka era. Internationally, he was central to Spain’s golden generation, helping the team capture the 2010 FIFA World Cup and back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
Busquets will see out the season with Inter Miami, where he has played alongside former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, before bidding farewell to the sport.
