A major road in Bangkok caved in on Wednesday, creating a massive sinkhole that disrupted traffic, damaged infrastructure, and forced emergency evacuations in the area.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that while no lives were lost, three vehicles were damaged in the collapse. Preliminary investigations suggest that ongoing construction of an underground train station may have triggered the incident.
Dramatic videos circulating online captured the road surface gradually sinking before collapsing entirely, dragging down electricity poles and rupturing water pipes.
Motorists were seen scrambling to reverse as the gaping hole widened, eventually splitting the four-lane road in two. One edge of the sinkhole stopped just short of a nearby police station, exposing its underground foundation.
The collapse has had a ripple effect on surrounding facilities. A nearby hospital announced the suspension of outpatient services for two days, though officials confirmed its main structure remains intact.
Residents and workers were, however, evacuated from the police station and other nearby buildings as a precaution.
Authorities have cut off power and water supplies in the affected zone, while emergency crews race against time to stabilize the site.
Governor Chadchart warned that ongoing monsoon rains could worsen the situation if swift repairs are not carried out.
