Bafana Bafana skipper Ronwen Williams says South Africa are edging closer to ending their poor run of results against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
South Africa have managed just two wins in 17 matches against Nigeria but have come close in recent encounters. At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, they forced Nigeria to penalties in the semi-final before losing 4-3. Their most recent clash, in September 2024, ended in a 1-1 draw.
Ahead of Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Bloemfontein, Williams believes Hugo Broos’ men can finally turn the tide.
“We’re getting closer and closer to beating them. We saw it at AFCON, we saw it when we played them away in Nigeria. Hopefully, we can take that extra step and change the narrative,” the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper told reporters.
The Super Eagles currently trail South Africa in Group C, making the clash a pivotal one in the race to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
