Nene Aderigbigbe, the mother of Afrobeats star Ayra Starr, has shared the personal reasons behind her decision to cut ties with three close friends, citing trust issues, uncomfortable experiences, and emotional fatigue.
In a reflective New Year message posted on TikTok, Aderigbigbe said the decision came after a period of self-examination, as she reviewed past relationships and considered what needed to change in her life.
According to her, the first fallout stemmed from a breach of trust. She explained that a private conversation she shared in confidence was later discussed with her husband without her permission. The incident, she said, led her to immediately distance herself from the friend.
The second friendship ended after what she described as inappropriate behaviour from the friend’s husband. Aderigbigbe revealed that she began receiving messages from him, including updates about his travel plans, which made her feel uneasy and disrespected.
She questioned why a friend’s spouse would feel comfortable sharing such personal details with her, noting that the situation crossed boundaries she was not willing to tolerate.
The third friendship, she said, gradually became emotionally draining. Aderigbigbe disclosed that the friend frequently complained about her marriage, despite being married for over two decades.
She explained that the constant negativity took a toll on her mental health, leaving her emotionally exhausted.
Aderigbigbe added that she chose not to confront or explain her reasons to the affected friends, stating that they remain unaware of why she severed ties with them.
Her comments have since sparked conversations online about personal boundaries, emotional well-being, and the importance of protecting one’s peace, even in long-standing friendships.
