Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has shared her admiration for Nigerian men, describing them as confident, supportive, and comparable to men in New York.
The singer made the remarks during a recent episode of the Way Up with Angela Yee podcast. While praising Nigerian men for their attentiveness to their partners, she also acknowledged that men, universally, have their flaws.
“Nigerian men love to take care of their women. They are very supportive of their wife or girlfriend. They are very, very confident, so it is almost the same thing as New York men. But you know, men are men. A man is a man still. It is universal,” Starr said.
Her comments follow months of online criticism from some Nigerian men who argued that her social media feminism advocacy conflicts with her behavior offline. Critics pointed to her excitement over meeting international artist Chris Brown and a dance video to Naira Marley’s song as examples they felt were inconsistent with her feminist image.
Starr has also faced scrutiny for her fashion choices. In response, she told critics in 2023 that they are neither her “pastor” nor “mother,” emphasizing her autonomy in self-expression.
The singer’s recent remarks highlight her appreciation for the support and confidence Nigerian men bring to relationships, while acknowledging the universal traits and complexities of men everywhere.
