Popular Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, has described his recent Trailblazer honour at the Silverbird Man of the Year Award as a humbling recognition of his years of innovation and consistency in the entertainment industry.
Speaking with journalists, the entertainer said the award validates the bold decisions he made to expand beyond stand-up comedy into filmmaking and large-scale entertainment events.
“It is deeply humbling. This award validates years of risk-taking, innovation and consistency. Being recognised as a trailblazer tells me that daring to expand beyond comedy into filmmaking and live entertainment was worth it. It is not a destination for me; it is motivation to keep raising the bar,” he said.
Expanding Beyond Comedy
Over the years, AY has grown into one of Nigeria’s most successful entertainers, building a strong presence in stand-up comedy, film production and major live shows.
His involvement in Nollywood has also contributed to the increasing global visibility of Nigerian films and entertainment content.
Reflecting on one of the most difficult decisions in his career, AY revealed that transitioning into film production required major financial investments and came with doubts.
“Transitioning into film production was a major risk. There were doubts and heavy financial commitments. But I believed in growth beyond stand-up comedy. I studied the market, built strong partnerships and stayed persistent. That decision expanded my brand globally,” he said.
Advice to Young Creatives
The comedian also advised aspiring entertainers to focus on discipline and preparation rather than quick fame.
According to him, understanding the business side of entertainment is just as important as talent.
“Build capacity before chasing applause. Talent is not enough. Learn the business, stay disciplined, remain consistent and never rely on shortcuts. Nigeria is challenging, but it rewards resilience and structure,” he added.
Upcoming Projects
Looking ahead, AY said he plans to expand his entertainment platforms while strengthening the global reach of Nigerian content.
One of his upcoming projects is the next edition of his flagship comedy show, AY Live, scheduled for Easter Sunday, April 5.
He also revealed plans to develop new film and digital projects aimed at promoting Nollywood internationally, alongside expanding The AY’s Open Mic Comedy Challenge, a platform designed to support emerging comedy talents.
Speaking on collaboration within the African entertainment industry, AY noted that partnerships across the continent and the diaspora could unlock even greater opportunities.
“There are many brilliant talents across Africa and the Diaspora. Collaboration is about timing and alignment. When vision and structure meet at the right time, great things happen,” he said.
