Plans to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation industry have been outlined by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), which is advocating the growth of strong domestic airlines and improved airport infrastructure.
The Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, made the call at the first-quarter Business Breakfast Meeting of the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative, where she stressed the need to support two to three indigenous airlines to evolve into national flag carriers.
She said the development of strong local carriers would significantly boost passenger and cargo traffic, while also enhancing the overall value of Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem.
Kuku explained that the initiative is part of broader reforms aimed at modernising airport operations and improving passenger experience across the country.
She noted that ongoing projects include upgrades at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, as well as plans to develop modern cargo terminals and cold-chain systems to support air freight services.
According to her, FAAN is also working to position Nigeria as a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul hub to ensure more value is retained within the country’s aviation sector.
In addition, she said the authority is introducing advanced technologies such as improved airfield lighting systems and the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System to enhance safety and efficiency.
Kuku added that sustained investment in infrastructure and the development of local airline capacity remain essential to building a more competitive and resilient aviation industry.
