The Ibadan Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has cautioned that a full-scale strike may be imminent, accusing the Federal Government of failing to show genuine commitment to resolving the ongoing industrial dispute.
Speaking at a press briefing at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, the Zonal Coordinator, Biodun Olaniran, said government officials have been misleading the public while slowing down the re-negotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
ASUU reiterated that its primary demand is the prompt re-negotiation of the 2009 Agreement by the Yayale Ahmed-led Committee to produce a new salary structure to replace the outdated CONUASS, especially given rising inflation.
The Union had embarked on a two-week warning strike on 13 October 2025 but suspended it five days early following interventions from students, parents, the NLC, the media, and other stakeholders. A one-month window was then granted for the government to conclude the re-negotiation and address related issues.
The Ibadan Zone comprises the University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, LAUTECH, Osun State University, Kwara State University, and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education. The press briefing featured the Zonal Coordinator alongside other chairpersons from the zone.
Olaniran noted that ASUU expected decisive action from a government committed to national development but instead encountered delays and propaganda. With only eight days left before the window expires, he said no substantial progress has been made.
While acknowledging the partial release of promotion arrears and third-party deductions, ASUU stressed that these do not address its core demands.
He added that the NEC meeting held at Taraba State University on 8–9 November 2025 reviewed the state of the Union’s engagements with both the Federal Government and state university Visitors.
