Unknown assailants on Tuesday morning raided Karujubu police post in Masindi Municipality and made off with equipment belonging to the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
The thieves reportedly broke into the post at around 3 a.m., stealing three laptops and a bag containing NIRA documents, extension cables, three batteries, and other valuables. It remains unclear whether officers assigned to the post were present during the raid.
However, two officers have since been arrested and charged with neglect of duty, according to Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region police spokesperson. Hakiza appealed to the public to share any information that could help recover the stolen items or lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
Solomon Asiimwe, LC III chairperson for Karujubu division, expressed concern that the theft may disrupt the ongoing national identity card renewal exercise in the area. He urged NIRA to intervene quickly to prevent delays.
Asiimwe noted that the division has seen a rise in break-ins and nighttime attacks, with criminals targeting residents under the cover of darkness. He called on the district security committee to increase night patrols to curb the wave of thefts.
Julius Isingoma, Karujubu town clerk, said the assailants also attempted to break into the accountant’s office but failed after being unable to dismantle the padlock. Suzan Nabunje Kiyengo, district NIRA registrar, confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details, saying the matter is under active police investigation.
