The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on Nigerian leaders and citizens to prioritize national unity, inclusive governance, and the effective implementation of policies as Christians across the country and the world observe Ash Wednesday.
In a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja and signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN described the period as an opportunity for reflection on Nigeria’s current state and the responsibilities of both citizens and leaders in shaping the nation’s future.
Highlighting ongoing social and economic challenges, the association noted that many Nigerians are grappling with rising living costs, unemployment, and persistent security threats affecting communities across the country.
“Nigeria is passing through a challenging period. Many households are struggling with the rising cost of living, uncertain job opportunities, and daily economic pressures. Security concerns continue to test the confidence of citizens in several parts of the country,” the statement said.
CAN emphasized that these challenges demand practical action, responsible leadership, and a shared commitment to lasting solutions. The association urged leaders at all levels to move beyond policy formulation to ensure tangible benefits for citizens.
“While Nigeria has numerous policies, the key challenge lies in implementing them fairly, transparently, and in ways that bring real relief to our people,” the statement added.
The group also stressed the importance of inclusive governance, reminding leaders to account for Nigeria’s diversity and ensure government programs reach the households, youth, and communities for whom they are intended.
Addressing citizens directly, CAN warned against division, misinformation, and violence, calling on Nigerians to embrace unity despite differences in faith, ethnicity, or culture.
“We encourage citizens to reject division, violence, and the spread of false information. Cooperation among religious communities and responsible civic conduct remain essential for peace and national stability,” CAN said.
The association further appealed to young Nigerians to focus on innovation, productive engagement, and nation-building, urging them to channel their energy into responsible participation in public life.
