The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has called on citizens to reflect on the current economic and security challenges facing the nation.
In a statement released today, Wednesday, Archbishop Okoh emphasized the need for collective responsibility to restore Nigeria’s status as a peaceful country.
“Nigeria is passing through a challenging period. Many households are struggling with the rising cost of living, uncertain job opportunities, and daily economic pressures.”
The Archbishop also highlighted the ongoing security issues affecting various communities, which continue to test citizens’ confidence.
“In several parts of the country, security concerns continue to affect communities and test the confidence of citizens. These realities call for practical action, responsible leadership, and a shared commitment to finding lasting solutions,” he noted.
He asserted that these realities necessitate practical actions, responsible leadership, and a united commitment to finding effective, lasting solutions
He urged leaders at all levels to transition from merely drafting policies to ensuring their effective implementation while asking citizens to refrain from actions that could lead to division and violence.
“Nigeria does not lack policies; the real challenge is ensuring they are carried out fairly, transparently, and in ways that bring real relief to citizens.
“Leaders must be intentionally inclusive in their decisions, mindful of Nigeria’s diversity and sensitivities, and committed to making sure government programmes truly reach the households, young people, and communities they are meant to serve,” Archbishop Okoh stressed.
In his message, he also encouraged citizens to reject divisive actions, violence, and the spread of misinformation.
“We also encourage citizens to reject division, violence, and the spread of false information. Our diversity; across faiths, ethnicities, and cultures remains one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths.
“Continued cooperation among religious communities, mutual respect, and responsible civic conduct are essential for maintaining peace and national stability,” he urged.
Archbishop Okoh specifically called on the youth to harness their creativity and determination in shaping the nation’s future.
“This period should remind you to channel your energy into innovation, productive enterprises, and responsible participation in public life,” he stated.
As Ash Wednesday is observed, he appealed for a renewed commitment to justice, compassion, and responsible citizenship, asserting that Nigeria’s progress hinges on the collective efforts of both leaders and citizens in building a better nation together.
