Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has backed the Super Eagles as one of the leading contenders to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026 in Morocco.
Gyan, whose country failed to qualify for the tournament, said Nigeria remain strong favourites alongside hosts Morocco and defending champions Ivory Coast.
Despite missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles are expected to chase a fourth continental title next month. Gyan believes their recent setbacks should serve as motivation.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 2025 CAF Awards in Morocco, he praised Nigeria’s competitiveness in recent years, saying the team has consistently come close to major success.
“We’ve got a lot of giants going there. Ghana is out, which we are disappointed about, but it’s okay—we have qualified for the World Cup. Nigeria did well; they were close the last two years. Ivory Coast did well, so we have a lot of teams,” Gyan said.
“Morocco is also a strong contender that is doing well. I will say these three countries that I have mentioned—Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Morocco—are favourites.”
Nigeria will compete in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.
