Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake has spoken candidly about the challenges he faced at home when he chose to pursue a career in music.
In a recent interview with Korty EO, the singer revealed that his decision was strongly opposed by his father, Fatai Odunsi, leading to a major fallout between them.
According to Asake, the disagreement became so intense that he decided to leave home at the age of 15 to follow his ambitions. He described his father as highly strong-willed, noting that their similar personalities made it difficult to resolve their differences at the time.
He recalled that although they shared a close bond during his early years, tensions grew when he insisted on pursuing music against his father’s wishes. Determined to succeed, he said he chose to move forward despite the lack of support.
Despite the rocky past, the singer emphasised that his love for his father never changed. He stressed that no matter the circumstances, his father would always remain an important figure in his life.
Asake also revealed that their relationship has since improved, with both parties reconciling after years of strain. He noted that he now takes responsibility for his father’s wellbeing, signaling a renewed sense of family unity.
The artist’s story adds to a growing narrative among Nigerian entertainers who have overcome early resistance from family members to achieve success in the music industry.
