The Federal Government has been urged to establish a Ministry of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate innovation, generate jobs, and boost Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
The call was made in Abuja by Ibrahim Muhammad, Director-General of the Ibrosoft International Development Foundation (IIDF), during a training programme for teachers, business leaders, and residents of the Federal Capital Territory on harnessing AI for personal growth, productivity, and new income opportunities.
Muhammad noted that artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping societies worldwide, and Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind. According to him, a dedicated ministry would not only regulate AI’s use but also promote generative AI applications capable of transforming key sectors of the economy.
“AI is transforming every aspect of life. If government creates a Federal Ministry of Artificial Intelligence, Nigeria will not only compete in Africa but globally—and one day, we will stand among developed countries,” Muhammad said.
Empowering Educators and Leaders
The training introduced participants to practical AI tools, including ChatGPT, with a focus on equipping educators and professionals who can transfer the knowledge to younger generations. Muhammad stressed that empowering teachers and leaders is critical to nurturing creativity and innovation, rather than raising passive consumers of technology.
He acknowledged AI’s risks—such as generating fake content—but emphasised its potential to detect and verify information when properly regulated. With the right policies, he argued, Nigeria could ensure the benefits far outweigh the downsides.

Attendees described the programme as transformative.
Mrs. Juliana Chijoke John, a primary school teacher in Abuja, said the training would help her responsibly introduce AI concepts in her classroom: “It’s going to enhance me as a teacher and also help the children. Some of my pupils already know about AI, so this training will guide me on how best to teach them responsibly.”
Nuhu Alia, a final-year Cyber Security student at Nile University, said the sessions broadened his approach: “As a student, I use ChatGPT and GitHub a lot. Now, I’ve learned how to apply them more effectively without relying on them completely.”
Unlocking Opportunities
The IIDF maintained that mainstreaming AI knowledge and establishing a dedicated ministry could unlock new pathways for national development, positioning Nigeria as a leader in technology-driven growth across Africa and beyond.
