Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised Diego Simeone for his remarkable longevity and success at Atletico Madrid, describing the Argentine’s 14-year tenure as “outstanding.”
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League showdown with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night at the Emirates Stadium, Arteta lauded Simeone’s leadership and the strong identity he has built at the LaLiga club.
“I think what he [Simeone] has done since he got to Atletico has been outstanding — not only what he has achieved but the way he has done it,” Arteta told reporters.
“The identity he has created for the club, for the team, the spirit — they are very simple and clear to identify, and that is because the manager is very much them.
To do that for 14 years is something incredible, so yeah, a pleasure to meet him.”
Arteta’s comments come as Arsenal prepare for a high-stakes European fixture following their 1–0 Premier League win over Fulham at the weekend. The Gunners are currently three points clear at the top of the Premier League table, while Atletico Madrid are aiming to maintain their strong Champions League form under Simeone.
