Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe admitted his side were below par after a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.
The Magpies took a surprise lead in the first half when Nick Woltemade powered in a fine header against the run of play. But the Gunners responded strongly after the break, with substitute Mikel Merino and defender Gabriel Magalhães scoring to seal victory.
The win lifts Arsenal to second place, just two points behind leaders Liverpool.
Reflecting on the loss, Howe said:
“I don’t think we were at our best today, being honest. Arsenal played very well. We had our chances and took the lead, and we were desperate to hang on. Nick [Pope] made some good saves for us, but it wasn’t to be, and we conceded set-pieces at the end. It was so disappointing.”
