Authorities have arrested multiple suspects in connection with the $100 million jewel heist at the Louvre Museum, Paris prosecutors confirmed Sunday one week after thieves pulled off one of the most audacious robberies in recent French history.
Paris Public Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the arrests took place Saturday evening, though she did not specify how many individuals were detained or release their identities. One suspect was reportedly caught at Roissy Airport while attempting to leave the country.
The seven-minute robbery, which unfolded early last Sunday, saw a group of thieves use a mechanised furniture elevator attached to a truck to smash through a Louvre window and access the Apollo Gallery, home to the French crown jewels and other priceless artifacts.
French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin acknowledged security failures at the museum, calling the incident a “deplorable image of France” and vowing a full review of security protocols.
Investigators are now working to determine how the gang breached one of the most heavily guarded museums in the world and where the stolen diamonds and jewels may have been taken.
