The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Waidi Shaibu, has charged troops of the 6 Division Nigerian Army to ensure optimum protection of critical national infrastructure, stressing that their role is central to the stability of Nigeria’s economy.
Shaibu gave the charge during his maiden operational visit to the division in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as part of his tour of army formations across the country to assess combat readiness, interact with personnel, and address operational challenges.
Addressing officers and men, the Army Chief emphasised that safeguarding key national assets remains a core mandate of the division and must be executed with discipline, commitment and dedication.
“Your job here is very key to protecting critical national infrastructure, and once you do that job very well, it will impact positively on the economy of the country. So you need to take your job very seriously — be disciplined, committed and dedicated to the mandate of this division,” he said.
Shaibu, who was appointed COAS by Bola Tinubu during a major security shake-up last October, assured the troops that their welfare remained a top priority under his leadership.
He disclosed that some of the challenges raised by the General Officer Commanding and brigade commanders had already been addressed, particularly in the area of accommodation.
“For instance, the issue of accommodation — we have approved the construction of additional accommodations,” he said.
The Army Chief further announced the renovation of existing quarters and the completion of ongoing infrastructure projects to ease housing challenges within the division. He also revealed plans to improve access to quality education for the children of military personnel.
“The renovation of certain quarters and the completion of some ongoing projects will go a long way in mitigating accommodation challenges. In terms of quality education for your children, that is also being looked into. In turn, we expect you to do your job conscientiously,” Shaibu added.
