Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the resolve of the Armed Forces to decisively confront any individual or group threatening the country’s unity, peace, or development.
In a message commemorating the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD), the defence chief warned that the military would remain relentless in defending the nation’s sovereignty and democratic values.
General Oluyede paid tribute to fallen service members, describing their sacrifices as the foundation upon which Nigeria’s freedom and democracy stand. He said their courage and selflessness represent the highest form of patriotism and assured that their legacy would remain permanently etched in the nation’s history. He also acknowledged the strength and sacrifices of their families, noting that their resilience deserves national recognition.
Commending troops currently deployed across different operational zones, the CDS praised their discipline, bravery, and dedication. According to him, their successes on the battlefield continue to improve national security, while their wounds and scars serve as lasting symbols of honour and commitment to duty.
Oluyede stressed that the welfare of military personnel remains central to his leadership philosophy. He explained that his strategic focus prioritises improved joint operations, enhanced troop welfare, and effective administration, all anchored on a whole-of-government approach to national security.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his consistent support and leadership, which he said have strengthened the military’s operational capacity.
Reassuring Nigerians, the CDS pledged the Armed Forces’ continued loyalty to the defence of democracy, peace, and national stability. He urged citizens to use the remembrance period to foster unity, discourage division, and honour the sacrifices of both fallen and serving personnel.
General Oluyede also encouraged Nigerians to wear the Armed Forces Remembrance emblem as a mark of respect and gratitude, while offering prayers for the repose of the souls of departed heroes and reaffirming the military’s commitment to securing a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
