The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Felix Morka, has said that Nyesom Wike is constitutionally free to champion President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election, despite remaining a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Morka made the remark during an interview with journalists on Thursday while reacting to Wike’s recent declaration that he would personally lead the campaign for Tinubu’s second-term bid.
According to the APC spokesman, Wike’s political position does not violate any constitutional principle, stressing that every Nigerian has the right to support and campaign for any candidate of choice.
“If he says so, that is wonderful. He is a citizen and has every constitutional right to vote as he chooses and canvass support for whoever he believes in,” Morka said.
He added that Wike’s political choices should be respected, describing the FCT Minister as a free political actor entitled to independent views and actions.
“What the minister does, he does as a citizen and a free agent. Nigerians should simply respect that,” he added.
Morka’s comments come amid renewed reconciliation moves within the Peoples Democratic Party following internal divisions between factions led by Mohammed Abdurahman and Tanimu Turaki.
At the 106th National Executive Committee meeting of the Mohammed Abdurahman-led faction in Abuja, Wike reportedly expressed readiness for reconciliation with the Turaki-led bloc.
Speaking separately in Abuja, Turaki also confirmed that fresh talks had begun to unite aggrieved factions within the opposition party.
Despite the PDP’s reconciliation efforts, Morka said the APC remains unfazed and fully focused on its own political preparations.
According to him, the ruling party’s immediate priority is its forthcoming national convention and strengthening party structures ahead of future elections.
“Our convention is approaching, and our attention is on ensuring that every necessary structure is in place. That is where our energy is directed,” he said.
He dismissed suggestions that the APC is preoccupied with developments within the opposition, insisting that the party is concentrating on strategy rather than rival political disputes.
“We are aware of what is happening in the opposition, but we are not losing sleep over it. If anything keeps us awake, it is how best to prepare for the elections ahead.”
Morka further argued that opposition parties appear more concerned about the APC than the APC is about them.
“They are the ones constantly watching us. The more time they spend obsessing over APC, the less time they have to prepare themselves for the elections,” he said.
