The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has raised concerns over efforts by certain groups, described as “secessionists,” to destabilize Governor Peter Mbah’s bid for a second term in office.
Speaking on Monday, caretaker committee chairman of the APC in the state, Ben Nwoye, clarified that the groups in question are not calling for a separate country but are agitating for the creation of a new state from parts of Enugu and, in some cases, adjoining areas of other southeastern states.
Nwoye alleged that these factions have been attempting to promote alternative candidates for the 2027 governorship election, sometimes from the same senatorial district as Governor Mbah, and other times from districts outside the East Senatorial zone, which is currently favored under the state’s rotational agreement.
“These actions are counterproductive given the excellent performance of Governor Mbah’s administration. Those opposing him aim to destabilize the state. Even if they are not Biafra agitators, they are recruiting political actors from Enugu East Senatorial zone to run in 2027. External influences from outside Enugu are also fueling this unrest.
“While we support the creation of additional states, it should not come at the expense of destabilizing the one we currently have”, Nwoye said.
The warning came during a meeting with the Enugu chapter of Asiwaju Renewed Mandate South East (ARMSE), led by Denge Josef Onoh, former spokesman of President Bola Tinubu in the Southeast. Onoh said their visit was motivated not only by the mandate to campaign for President Tinubu’s re-election but also to support Governor Mbah in order to maintain political stability in Enugu.
“Supporting Governor Mbah to complete two terms safeguards the rotational system that has kept the state stable and prevents potential political crises,” Onoh said. “We pledge our full support to ensure that the established understanding in the state is respected and upheld”.
