A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Bayelsa State, Festus Sunday, has commended Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, for quitting the Peoples Democratic Party.
According to reports that Diri announced his resignation from PDP on Wednesday.
Sunday said the governor’s decision is one of the best things to happen to the state, describing it as bold, forward-looking and rooted in transgenerational thinking.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday in Yenagoa, Sunday said that political parties are vehicles for election and that the pronouncement defines Diri as a statesman with a clear understanding of the political weather in the country.
The APC chieftain added, “Diri and his team joining the APC will carry significant weight in shaping the fortunes of Bayelsa State.
“Bayelsa State will connect the federal and further deepen the vision of the Prosperity Administration.”
Sunday described Diri as a “Peaceful, accommodating and bipartisan leader who has been governing the state in an all-inclusive manner” and urged “all Bayelsans to respect his inalienable right of freedom of association.”
He said to those who choose to remain in the PDP to play opposition politics, it is their constitutional right, as plurality of choice is the hallmark of democracy.
But he stated that the state’s interest must take precedent over personal interests and appealed to all Bayelsans not to relent in their support for the governor for the continued growth of the state.
