Two individuals lost their lives on Monday morning following a tragic road accident involving British-Nigerian boxing icon Anthony Joshua on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. in the Makun area near Sagamu, Ogun State.
Reports indicate that a Lexus SUV carrying the former heavyweight champion collided with a stationary truck under circumstances currently being reviewed by traffic authorities.
The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the details of the crash later that afternoon. Spokesperson Afolabi Odunsi verified that while Joshua escaped with minor injuries, two other occupants of the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.
The boxer, who recently secured a knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami, had returned to his ancestral home in Sagamu for the festive season before the unfortunate collision.
“It’s true, but he is alive. About five people were involved; two died. I will send you a release shortly,” Odunsi stated, noting that a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident is already underway.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described a harrowing rescue effort near the Danco filling station, where bystanders assisted in pulling survivors from the wreckage before emergency responders arrived.
The Lexus SUV was reportedly traveling as part of a two-vehicle convoy, accompanied by a security detail in a trailing Pajero.
While the fatalities have cast a shadow over the boxer’s visit, hospital sources confirm that Joshua remains in stable condition and is receiving medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries.
