A preliminary investigation by the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun State indicates that a burst tyre and overspeeding led to the car accident involving former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, resulting in the deaths of two of his associates.
TRACE revealed that the front passenger-side tyre of the SUV Joshua was traveling in failed, causing a loss of control before the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. TRACE also confirmed that excessive speed contributed to the severity of the crash.
Speaking to reporters, TRACE spokesman, Babatunde Akinbiyi said, “From the preliminary investigation, there was definitely overspeeding. In the course of that, the front tyre on the passenger side burst, leading to a loss of control before the vehicle swerved into the stationary truck”.
The 36-yer-old was hospitalized at Duchess International Hospital in Lagos and is reported to be in stable condition. Tragically, two members of his team, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, were killed at the scene, confirmed Matchroom Boxing.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described the incident as a “tragic loss that has cast a shadow over the season”, offering sympathies to Joshua and praying for his recovery.
Condolences also came from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, who described the accident as “saddening, painful, and most unfortunate”.
