The Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Anambra 2025 election, Senator Uche Ekwunife, has disclosed that the party at the national level failed to give its candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, the support needed to unseat Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Ekwunife made the disclosure during a stakeholders’ meeting of the party in Awka to appraise APC’s performance in the state in the ongoing e-registration process.
The former lawmaker said the November 8 governorship election witnessed massive commitment from party members in Anambra State, but lamented that the party leadership did not reciprocate with adequate support. She added that even minimal backing from the national leadership would have significantly altered the outcome.
She said: “The extent of support and commitment we saw in the last election among members of APC in Anambra State has never happened before. If the party (national) had given us even 20 percent push, we would have gone far. We failed everybody, we failed our party, we failed our people.
“Yes, it is true that God gives power to who He wills, power belongs to God and God belongs to all of us, including politicians in our party, so He can give it to us if we work for it. That is why Jesus said give Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to Him.”
According to her, for the first time, APC members in Anambra were united and eager to win the governorship election, but only needed recognition and support as members of the ruling party at the federal level.
On the ongoing e-registration exercise, Ekwunife urged party members to take the process seriously, stressing that it was more than a headcount but a database that would determine how members are rewarded and empowered.
“Some of you are seeing the process as mere registration, but it is a critical database that will help the party about the data of the party members, and this they want to use to empower their members. The people registering are the real owners of the party,” she said.
She also disclosed that the party has already agreed on President Bola Tinubu as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election, pledging total support for his re-election bid.
Earlier, the Anambra State Chairman of APC, Mr. Basil Ejidike, expressed dissatisfaction with the poor participation of members in the ongoing e-registration process, noting that Anambra and Abuja ranked lowest nationwide.
Similarly, the state coordinator of the e-registration exercise, Hon. Joe Okekeuche, revealed that only 17,488 members had registered so far. He identified Njikoka, Awka South and Onitsha South as the best-performing local government areas, while Ihiala, Idemili South and Anambra West ranked lowest.
