Nigeria’s hurdles sensation and world record holder, Tobi Amusan, has officially kickstarted her 2026 outdoor campaign with a display of remarkable range, clinching second place in the women’s 200m at the Velocity Fest in Jamaica. Stepping away from her signature barriers to test her raw speed, the 28-year-old sprint star crossed the finish line in a season-best 23.25 seconds. Amusan’s performance placed her just behind the legendary Jamaican multi-Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, who dominated the heat in 22.61 seconds, while fellow Jamaican Ackera Nugent rounded out the top three in 23.35 seconds.
This Jamaican outing marks Amusan’s first competitive appearance since her podium finish at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. During that global showpiece last September, she served as Nigeria’s lone medalist, securing a hard-fought silver in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.29 seconds. Her strong start in the half-lap sprint is viewed by coaching staff as a strategic foundation for her speed endurance as she prepares to transition back to her primary discipline later this summer.
The “Queen of Hurdles” is already confirmed for a blockbuster return to the 100m hurdles at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, scheduled for July 4. This Diamond League fixture at the iconic Hayward Field—a track where Amusan famously shattered the world record with a 12.12-second dash in 2022—will see her face a “who’s who” of elite talent. The confirmed lineup includes Olympic gold medalist Masai Russell, double world champion Danielle Williams, and Tokyo bronze medalist Grace Stark, setting the stage for what many experts predict will be the fastest race of the year.
Amusan’s history at Hayward Field is nothing short of legendary, having claimed her maiden world title and back-to-back Diamond League trophies at the venue. Her sustained dominance in the sport is underscored by her three consecutive Diamond League overall titles between 2021 and 2023, a feat few in the history of the event have matched. As she builds momentum toward the mid-season peaks, this early-season sharpness in Jamaica suggests that the Nigerian icon remains a formidable force to be reckoned with on the world stage.
