Senate nominee, Joash Amupitan, has pledged to undertake a comprehensive audit of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), focusing particularly on the logistics of the 2023 general elections.
Amupitan made the pledge on Thursday during his screening at the Committee of the Whole in the Senate.
He said the exercise would help uncover operational challenges within the Commission and lead to practical reforms through collaboration with key stakeholders.
Quoting a ruling of the Supreme Court, Amupitan noted that the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IREV) was not part of the Commission’s results collation system. He, however, pointed out that this information was not clearly communicated to Nigerians before the 2023 polls.
“A lot of people believed that IREV was part of the results collation process, but the Supreme Court has made it clear that it is not,” Amupitan said.
He further stressed the need to establish an Electoral Offences Commission to investigate and prosecute election-related crimes.
Amupitan, a Professor of Law at the University of Jos, was nominated by President Bola Tinubu as the next INEC Chairman following the conclusion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s two-term tenure. His nomination was recently approved by the National Council of State.
