Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has explained why he left in-form striker Benjamin Sesko out of his starting lineup for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield.
Despite Sesko scoring in two consecutive matches, Amorim opted to start Matheus Cunha as the central striker, supported by Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount.
Following United’s hard-fought 2–1 victory, Amorim told reporters that his decision was based on tactical considerations aimed at neutralising Liverpool’s defensive pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté.
“Sometimes the characteristics of the game change the way you are going to approach the game,” Amorim said.
“So I think, for example, with [Matheus] Cunha in the middle — if we put Ben [Sesko], I think it’s easier for this kind of centre-backs to control our striker. So we tried to do that.”
The Portuguese tactician also acknowledged the fine margins of managerial decision-making, adding:
“When you win, the coach is amazing, and when you lose, there’s something wrong with the manager. I understand that.”
United’s win at Anfield marked their second consecutive league victory, boosting their confidence as they aim to climb further up the Premier League table.
