American rapper Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., popularly known as DDG, has criticised what he described as misleading Western narratives about Nigeria, saying the country is far safer than often portrayed in foreign media.
The hip-hop star, who is currently spending time in Lagos, shared his views in a video broadcast, urging foreigners not to rely on secondhand reports but to experience Nigeria firsthand.
According to DDG, claims that Nigeria is excessively dangerous do not align with his personal experience. He argued that insecurity exists in many parts of the world and should not be used to single out Nigeria.
“I honestly think America is the most dangerous country,” he said. “I don’t think Nigeria is as dangerous as America—nowhere near.”
While acknowledging that Nigeria faces security challenges, DDG noted that gun violence and gang-related crimes are more prevalent in the United States than in Nigeria. He encouraged those considering a visit to disregard negative stereotypes and travel to the country themselves.
The rapper also addressed warnings he received before his trip, including claims that Nigerian food was unhealthy and advice to boil drinking water at all times. He said those assertions proved inaccurate based on his experience.
DDG revealed that he found Nigerian meals healthy and enjoyable, singling out jollof rice as a standout.
His comments have sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians welcoming his remarks and others debating global perceptions of safety, media bias, and cultural representation.
