The management of Amahoro Secondary School has denied accusations that their teacher assaulted to death a senior two student.
Majorline Nantumbwe, was laid to rest on Saturday at Kabale-Bugonzi along Masaka Road and her mother, Ruth Nassolo, alleges that she was beaten by a teacher who accused her of faking illness to avoid classes.
The school is located in Kirya-Gonja, Matugga town council in Wakiso district. Nassolo further claims that the school kept Nantumbwe in its clinic for three weeks and only informed her when the girl’s condition had significantly worsened.
“My daughter was kept at the school for three weeks, yet they knew they did not have adequate health facilities to treat her,” Nassolo said.
“They called me when she was critically ill, and she told me she had been beaten. I tried to take her to a health facility, but she died at the doorway!”
However, the school’s deputy head teacher, Martin Kaweesa dismissed the allegations, maintaining that there is no evidence the student was beaten.
“We have CCTV cameras installed around the school,” Kaweesa said. “They would have captured any incident of a teacher assaulting a student. Nantumbwe was a calm student and had never been reported for misconduct. We suspect the parents were aware of her illness but did not inform the school. We are deeply saddened by her death and are ready to cooperate with any investigations.”
Meanwhile, Nantumbwe’s mother Immaculate Naluwagga claims they failed to follow police advice to carry out a postmortem examination at Mulago hospital before the burial because they lacked the financial resources.
Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Rachael Kawala stated that no formal complaint has been lodged by the family.
“No one has officially reported this incident to the police,” Kawala said. “We encourage the parents to file a complaint so that investigations can begin, including the possibility of exhuming the body for a postmortem to establish the exact cause of death.”
In recent weeks, Matugga has been associated with a series of tragic incidents involving children and students. Last month, a student, Martin Bukenya, was allegedly beaten to death by his girlfriend’s father, Herbert Lumu Masasizi.
In a separate incident, a seven-year-old girl, Michelle Nabukenya, was kidnapped, raped, and later murdered. Kampala North Police commander SSP Moses Nanoka has since led a community sensitization efforts in the area to address the rising concerns.
