Obiageri Amaechi has secured Team Nigeria’s first medal in athletics at the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games, winning silver in the women’s discus event on the opening day of the track and field programme.
Amaechi recorded a best throw of 56.99m, falling short of the gold medal by a slim margin of 0.05m to American-born Bahraini athlete Nora Monie, who clinched first place with an effort of 57.04m. Turkey’s Ozlem Becerek completed the podium after finishing third with a throw of 55.56m. Nigeria’s national discus record holder, Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons, placed fourth after producing a distance of 55.08m.
The medal strengthens Nigeria’s overall haul at the Islamic Solidarity Games 2025, bringing the nation’s total to 16 medals—six gold, six silver, and four bronze—positioning Nigeria in eighth place on the current standings.
Amaechi’s podium finish comes as a significant boost following her earlier setback at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she exited the women’s discus event in the opening round. In Tokyo, she registered a first attempt of 55.69m, followed by 48.82m on her second throw, and was unable to improve on her final effort, resulting in her elimination before the final round.
Onyekwere-Lyons, just outside the medal spots in fourth place, also delivered a commendable performance for Team Nigeria with her 55.08m throw, further contributing to the country’s positive start in the athletics events.
