Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso says he is “hurt” after watching his side suffer a 5-2 thrashing at Atletico Madrid on Saturday, their first defeat of the season.
Robin Le Normand opened the scoring for Atlético before Kylian Mbappé and Arda Güler briefly put Madrid ahead. Alexander Sørloth equalised in added time, then Julián Álvarez struck twice — from the penalty spot and a free kick — to put the hosts in control, with Antoine Griezmann adding a late fifth.
“It was a bad game. We didn’t play well collectively, with or without the ball,” Alonso admitted.
“We know we’re in a construction phase, but there are no excuses. We were lacking a gear. This defeat hurts.”
