Sevilla head coach Matías Almeyda has offered a glowing assessment of Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, labeling the winger as the preeminent footballer on the planet today. The endorsement comes as the Andalusian side prepares for a daunting LaLiga encounter at the Camp Nou this Sunday. While the league-leading Catalans are looking to rebound from a frustrating 1–1 stalemate against Newcastle United in the Champions League, Sevilla enters the fixture sitting in 14th place, desperate to distance themselves from the lower reaches of the table.
Despite the disparity in league positions, Almeyda highlighted the sheer quality present in Hansi Flick’s squad, with particular emphasis on Yamal’s meteoric rise. At just 18 years old, the forward has already secured a runner-up finish in the Ballon d’Or standings and has maintained elite production this season, tallying 20 goals and 15 assists in 37 appearances. Almeyda suggested that the youngster’s trajectory remains steep, making him the focal point of a formidable Barcelona roster.
Reflecting on the challenge of containing the Spanish international, Almeyda noted:
“Currently, he is among the best in the world; he is young and gets better every day. For me, he is the best player in the world today. It is a joy to see him play, but he is not their only talent. They have another in midfield, and even more on the bench.”
The Sevilla manager also acknowledged the historical difficulty of the fixture, pointing out that his club has failed to secure a victory at the Camp Nou for nearly a quarter of a century. Despite Barcelona’s recent midweek exertion in Europe, Almeyda remains wary of their depth and tactical consistency, viewing them as the gold standard of domestic football.
Addressing the magnitude of the task facing his players, Almeyda added:
“Barcelona, even when fatigued, consistently performs at an outstanding level from any viewpoint. The match will differ from the home game. We will attempt to replicate similar strategies, but we are also conscious that it has been 23 and a half years since we last triumphed there. That is a significant duration. Some of the players have never experienced it. We are going to face the best team in La Liga and one of the best in Europe.”
As Sevilla looks to break their 23-year drought in the Catalan capital, the spotlight remains firmly on Yamal, whose ability to decide matches has become the defining characteristic of this rejuvenated Barcelona side.
